Being a contract pilot which I am, differs noticeably from a conventional airline pilot working for a leading airline as a career pilot. While the pilot salary can be similar there is a massive difference in the conditions and also job security. I have been a contract pilot for at least ten years I’ll say that I have been very fortunate on both accounts and all indications are indicating that these will only improve.
Recently I received a letter from the president of the contract company that employs me to fly for a major airline in Japan. Essentially the letter informed us that many pilots were quitting to move onto other roles and demanding that we give the mandatory notice upon our decision to leave. It also gave some other extraordinarily encouraging news.
Minus 1 or 2 airlines in the US the majority of the planet’s airlines are assertively inducting, opening up many options for pilots particularly those who are prepared to take contract positions. Airlines in Asian states like China, India, Japan and Korea as well as the middle East are having intense problem in hiring enough pilot numbers to crew their aircraft.
What we are beginning to see is that in order to attract pilots, airlines are offering higher incomes and better working conditions. Now one of the differences between a contract and career pilot is that there is generally no set seniority in a contract job. Career pilots in an Airline benefit from increased incomes and better schedules the longer they stay, which is not the case for a contract pilot. So it is mostly a simple call for a contract pilot to head to another job.
What we are witnessing now is that with so many airlines trying for contract pilots we are seeing wages and conditions being offered at greater levels all of the time. Already many airlines are moaning about the loss of pilots to other airlines. The other inspiring news I discussed before was that we could soon expect to see a raise in our present conditions. Happy Days.
At his website www.pilotsalary.co Steve Brennan debates many topics in relation to airlines and pilots as well as the later aviation news. From what is a pilot salary to what airline roles are available now.
