Western Turkey
A trip to the western portion of the country showcases its European influence. Reputable cities, such as Istanbul and Edirne, are filled with European history dating back centuries. Traces of the former Roman and Ottoman Empires can still be witnessed throughout the region. History has left behind some of the most intricate and superbly-crafted buildings the world has ever known such as the Valens Aqueduct and the Topkapi Palace.
Travellers can also enjoy the many seaside resorts in the area, particularly in Dalaman. People from all over the world take flights to Dalaman to enjoy one of the lavish beach resorts along the Aegean Sea such as Dalyan and Fethiye.
Central Turkey
This part of Turkey showcases the beauty of the natural environment. Travellers with an appreciation for nature will marvel at the massive rock formations with stunning shapes that adorn the landscape of this region. Many of these amazing crafts of nature can be found in Pasabag, also known as, “Monk Valley”.
Ancient monasteries can also be found in this part of Turkey for those with an appreciation for history. Many of these can be seen in Cappadocia, where soft volcanic rock deposits were transformed into monasteries and other types of dwellings.
Of course, one cannot overlook Turkey’s capital city of Ankara. This modernized city combines elements from its ancient past with skyscrapers, large shopping centres and traditional mosques.
Eastern Turkey
Rolling hills and mountains comprise much of this part of the country. The more adventurous travellers can attempt the climb of the country’s highest peak, located on Mount Ararat. Beautiful lakes, such as Lake Hazar and Lake Van, also can be found nestled in the region. The mountains near the city of Erzurum feature some of the best skiing in the area.
Travellers can see Turkey’s ties to the Kurdish culture by visiting the south-eastern city of Diyarbakir. This walled city sits on the banks of the Tigris River and is known to experience hot temperatures.
